How to Sew Elastics on Ballet Shoes

The majority of elastics are purposely left off the shoe when purchased so the dancer can sew them on in the exactly the right place. There are also variations where the elastics can come partially pre-sewn onto the shoe.

Follow our guide below on how to sew both single and cross elastics onto your new ballet shoes. We offer a step by step guide on how to sew elastics into both variations of ballet shoes.

You will need the following items: Bloch ballet shoes with either single or cross elastics, sewing needle, coloured thread to match the shoe, a safety pin(s) and a pair of scissors. Most of the items can be found in our classic ribbon kit or pointe shoe kit.

How to sew single elastics into Ballet Shoes

Step 1

Fold down the heel of your ballet shoe flat against the lining and use a pencil to mark where the folded upper meets the binding on both sides of the shoe.

Step 2

Stitch one side of elastic onto the sock lining and binding but be careful not to stitch through the drawstring or the ballet shoe upper.

Step 3

Put on the ballet shoe and pull the elastic over the instep, place a pencil mark where the elastic meets the binding and stitch the elastic to the other side.

How to Sew Cross Elastics into Ballet Shoes

Step 1

Put on the ballet shoe and pull the crossover elastics over your ankle towards the opposite side of the shoe. Use a pencil to mark where the elastic needs to be sewn and pin the elastic in place with a safety pin.

Step 2

Remove your feet from the ballet shoes. Stitch the elastics to the ballet shoe using a matching coloured thread and needle. Repeat this for the other strand of elastic.

Step 3

Once the elastics are stitched on, try the ballet shoes on your feet and see if they feel comfortable and a good fit. If you're happy with them then you can cut off any excess elastic and you'll be prepared and ready for your next ballet class.
